How to Do Block Island Right: A Perfect Summer Weekend Getaway

How to Do Block Island Right: A Perfect Summer Weekend Getaway

Just off the coast of Rhode Island sits a hidden gem of New England—Block Island. Unlike its more famous Massachusetts counterparts, this nine-mile-long island is in its own little world. BI offers breathtaking coastal beauty, a vibrant seasonal community, and the kind of laid-back summer magic that makes you never want to leave. If you're looking for the ultimate island escape filled with sun, surf, and unforgettable experiences, Block Island is the perfect weekend getaway.

Getting There & Checking In

To truly soak in everything Block Island has to offer, we took Friday off—a must for anyone looking to experience the island properly. We hopped on the morning ferry, letting the salty air wake us up as we made our way 33 miles across the water. Stepping off the ferry, we were greeted by the Victorian charm and small-town feel of downtown Block Island before making our way to our home base for the weekend: the Block Island Beach House.

The hotel was everything we hoped for and more—The building itself is a classic Victorian hotel brought into the modern era, boasting stunning ocean views, a breezy surf-inspired aesthetic, and best of all, its very own beachfront access. After checking in, we wasted no time taking advantage of one of the biggest perks: beach chair service. There’s nothing quite like kicking back in the sand with a cocktail in hand, waves crashing nearby, and fresh seafood for lunch—all without ever having to leave home base.

The Best of Block Island Dining & Nightlife

After some much-needed relaxation on the beach, we headed back to our room to freshen up for the evening. With ocean views and coastal decor, our space at the Beach House was the perfect place to recharge before dinner.

That night, we dined at The Barn at Spring House, a quick walk from Block Island Beach House. This legendary island staple lived up to every bit of its reputation. The atmosphere was lively, the food was divine, and the drinks were expertly crafted. Every bite felt like a celebration of summer.

With dinner wrapped up, we made our way to Captain Nick’s, the go-to spot for live music and Block Island’s famous nightlife. This place is an experience in itself—great bands, cold drinks, and a lively dance floor. The energy was contagious, and we stayed out later than planned, reveling in the carefree island vibe.

Exploring Block Island by Bike

Saturday morning greeted us with perfect weather—exactly what we needed for a full day of adventure. The best way to explore Block Island? By bike. Renting bikes allowed us to take in every stunning view at our own pace, from the dramatic cliffs of Mohegan Bluffs to the serene beauty of North Light Beach.

One of the highlights of our ride was stopping at the top of the bluffs, where we caught a glimpse of Block Island Race Week in full swing. Watching the colorful spinnakers fill the horizon as sailboats bobbed downwind was an unforgettable sight.

Midday, we made our way to The Oar, a must-visit spot for lunch. We enjoyed fresh sushi with unbeatable views of the harbor, all while sipping on their famous Oar Mudslide—a dangerously delicious frozen cocktail that instantly put us in vacation mode.

After another round of island exploration, we returned to the hotel for a quick reset before heading out for the evening. A pre-dinner drink at The Surf, the Beach House’s own oceanfront bar, was the perfect way to kick things off. There’s something magical about enjoying  the late afternoon glow over the water with a drink in hand.

Dinner with a View at The Atlantic

For our final dinner, we made our way to The Atlantic, perched high on the island with stunning panoramic views. The night was warm, the air was filled with that perfect summer saltiness, and the food? Absolutely incredible. The chef even came out to chat, adding a personal touch to an already amazing meal.

Everything about the night felt perfect—great company, spectacular scenery, and the kind of effortless enjoyment that only comes from a well-spent day on Block Island. It was the ideal way to wrap up our weekend getaway.

Wrapping Up & Heading Home

Sunday morning came too soon, but we couldn’t leave without grabbing a few souvenirs to remember the trip. After one last stroll through downtown, we reluctantly boarded the ferry back to the mainland, already dreaming of our next visit.
